High 5-0 and Claire

Written by Bodyneed on March 13th, 2015.      0 comments

The High 5-0 Challenge is a daunting concept. Endurance runner Mal Law has set out to climb 50 peaks and run 50 marathons in 50 days, all to raise awareness and funds for mental wellbeing in New Zealand. It’s not a task for the faint-hearted (or unfit) and it’s been driven by a very personal tragedy.

Mal’s brother-in-law took his own life at the tender age of 25 after losing a battle with mental illness. Having struggled with depression off and on for years himself, Mal made a stand to do something about it – with a goal to raise $400,000 for the Mental Health Foundation NZ and really get people talking.

The Challenge kicked off on the 7th of February and is set to be all over on the 28th of March. With only two weeks to go the team look set to hit their target of $400,000 and the challenge has definitely got people talking.

Claire Fox, our long time friend and patron, has taken up her own challenge to support Mal on one of the 50 marathons, a 42km endurance run through the Hunua Ranges, scheduled for the 25th of March.

Claire was inspired to joined the challenge after watching a news story on Mal and talking to other runners sporting “High 5-0” t-shirts. While not having been affected by depression personally, Claire has seen friends struggle with this in the past and wanted to do something to help de-stigmatize mental illness.

“I’ve seen friends feel like they can’t talk about what they are going through, scared to share their experiences,” said Claire, “It’s been really encouraging getting involved and hearing people’s personal stories. I really think the Challenge is helping to get people talking and encouraging people to open up to others.”

Claire is a dedicated endurance runner and has competed in the Coast-to-Coast challenge the last two years. A busy sales and marketing executive based in Auckland, she juggles her training schedule with a long-distance commute to Wellington, where her husband is based.

While Claire is currently nursing an injury, she has her fingers crossed that she will be able to run the Hunua Ranges challenge come the 25th. We’ve got our finger crossed too Claire!
