Why Total Barre? Or, in other words, Why should I take Total Barre?

Written by Bodyneed on August 11th, 2015.      0 comments

Unless you’ve had your head in hole over the last little while, you will likely have heard about Barre Classes. Counting celebrities Ginnifer Goodwin, Natalie Portman, Zoey Deschanel Lynn amongst their devotees, the craze is now slowly starting to sweep New Zealand.

The name (and imagery) may lead you to believe that Barre is a pared-back form of ballet, a class best suited for women living out childhood dreams of being (or looking like) a ballerina.  Don’t be mistaken, some barre classes may perhaps live up to this reputation – but Total Barre is a little bit different.

Based on the Stott principles of Pilates, Total Barre is a high-intensity total body workout that uses your body weight and small hand weights for resistance to achieve total body strengthening and toning.

In the words of our senior physio, Jennifer East “It is a ridiculously fun, fresh workout”. Integrating elements of Pilates, dance, cardio and strength training, Total Barre increases strength, flexibility, stamina and dynamic stability.

Why we love it:

It’s no secret that our team at Bodyneed are raving Pilates fans. We believe there is no better exercise form for developing muscle balance, improving stability and restoring mobility to the body.

That said, we know that it’s not for everyone (well, it is, but we know that some people have a hard time enjoying the slower pace and focus of Pilates classes). Total Barre allows us to take Pilates to the next level as it ramps up the intensity and gets people off the ground, training against gravity. If you love a high energy, total body workout but really want to reap the benefits of Pilates and functional strengthening then Total Barre is for you. While still based on Pilates principles it is a bit more laid back, so you don’t have to stress out that you’re not doing things perfectly.

Who is it for:

Short answer-everyone!

Sitting all day in the office can lead to poor posture- tight hip flexors, rounded shoulders, neck stiffness and more. Total Barre helps lengthen short tight muscles and encourages beautiful posture though a strong mobile spine. Set to great music Total Barre is a great stress buster- guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

This is a class where you will definitely ‘feel the burn’ but, like our Pilates classes, our certified instructors can modify the exercises to make sure you get a great and safe workout whatever level you are at.

Our favourite things about Total Barre:
  • It gets results!
  • It’s fun
  • It’s a great workout - you really feel the burn
  • It’s a great way to get functional strengthening
  • You’ll tone up whilst creating great muscle balance
What you need for a Total Barre workout:
  • No dance experience required!!
  • Clothes that allow you to move easily through the whole range of motion
  • A towel and drink bottle – you really will work up a sweat
  • A snack for after the class – this workout is intense
  • You’ll probably feel the a bit sore the next day – so while it’s not a must – we recommend booking in a massage to get those muscles healing faster!
See you out there!
